Hello crusaders! In lieu of my regular type of more in-depth review, I wanted to give some quick picks for the week based on what I read out of the shop (and computer) that I felt was worth a look for 8/21/13. Here we go:

I am a little behind on the Wood run, and I feel doubly awful that I have yet to catch up on the recent first volume of the trade with art by Becky Cloonan. With that lament done, however: after a hallucinogenic last arc, this issue kicks off a new story that seems to be shaping up to have some funky cult/black magic as the big bad. Azaceta has art that take a few minutes to adjust to (it seemed a bit uneven sometimes early), but not enough to distract from the mood and pace of the story that Wood is trying to shape.

If you haven’t gotten a chance to catch up with this digital series, fear not and go ahead and order (or pick up) the first print trade of issues #1-6 through your local LCS. What you will find is a very smart, well crafted, conceptually sound, slightly different angle to super-hero comics in general, not just Superman, but the whole genre. Our favorite super villain Edison Rex is still struggling with his new role as possible protector in this issue, but the real treat this time is how Chris Roberson and Dennis Culver utilize the digital guided view technology of comixology to full thematic effect to tell an inter-dimensional story you would expect from the pen of Grant Morrison or in a dusty collection from the Silver Age of comics. For a mere 0.99 cents you are going to get a taste of one of the two best super-hero books available today (the other being Michel Fiffe’s Copra).

So one traditional print comic and one digital…see not so painful, and all together it will set you back less than a five spot if taxes are kind to you where you live.
